Tauriel is just the kind of kickass The Hobbitt needed, plus a dash of starcrossed love

Seriously, love Evangeline Lilly as Tauriel.
Let's be honest.  We already know that this one just isn't for the Tolkien purists.  The Hobbitt went off the rails in the first installment.  And there's no going back now.  They brought Legolas back into the action.  The first film seemed bloated with action and lacked character development.  I've decided to embrace the chaos.

And in this installment, instead of Kili and Fili helping Bilbo to find the door to the mountain, instead of camping in the Mirkwood forest for a month with dwarves establishing their characters through sharing their lore and singing their songs to each other, we got Tauriel played by Evangeline Lilly.   Really, it seems like a fair trade.

The Federal Health Care Fiasco aka Obamacare

I signed up for a health care account on the federal website one night. Through I grew up in Los Angeles, I spent a brief stint at “the other USC” for a Master of Music in Opera Theater, and felt obligated to check it out. It took less than 5 minutes at 11pm Pacific time. I can’t figure out what all the fuss is about this “failed” website. Since I don’t live in SC anymore and already have health care, I had to stop with creating an account.

There wasn’t a single glitch with creating an account. Yet I hear people complaining all the time. What do a few glitches matter anyway? Email and other websites go down for maintenance on a regular basis, and some of their new features crash. Firefox crashes constantly. Security software eats up far too much RAM. Software updates to Firefox, Silverlight, Java, and Adobe cause constant crashes and complaints. Instead of blaming any of these possibilities, everyone blames Healthcare.gov.

In my opinion, this is one of those things we can chalk up partly to the outright hatred President Obama has experienced for being a foreign-born African illegal alien Muslim when he is actually a US citizen born in Hawaii and professes Christian beliefs. And even if he weren’t born in Hawaii, it still wouldn’t matter because his mother was a US citizen. The Obama are the most affectionate family I have seen in the White House. Malia and Sasha still hold hands with their parents in public. The First Lady has been very active in her role, always impeccably dressed. And yet this daughter of two relatively affluent lawyers is constantly called “ghetto.” It's ridiculous.  The President of the last two terms and his family are Black, it’s time to get over it.

Shopping savvy - how to get great discounts online and cashback

OK, it may seem too good to be true.  But it's not.  If you make any of your purchases online, you owe it to yourself to sign up for a cashback website.  Some even offer extra coupon codes for discounts.  My new favorite of these discount programs is called Shop at Home.

I was shopping around for a home elliptical.  I can't work out for very long because of injuries and really wanted to get back in shape without the intimidation of going to the gym.  I found what I was looking for - the Nordic Track ACT elliptical trainer.  Shop At Home had, in addition to 3% cash back, a coupon code for 10% off which totally worked.  So, yes, right now I'm a believer.

If you sign up and begin making purchases at all the online stores you love, you will get a $5 bonus.  Payouts begin at $20.  And, yes, I would get a $5 bonus when you make a purchase within a few weeks.  But wouldn't you like that?  I always compare my cash back programs and I have saved a few hundred dollars on purchases.  It's really cool, and it costs NOTHING to join.  Check it out!

New options in low wattage lighting - halogen adapted to light bulbs

I get hits from all over the world, and I'm not sure how other countries are about this.  In the US, there is a move toward lower wattage lighting in the last few years.  But it also meant buying fluorescent lights with mercury in them.  While I'm a big fan of saving on the electric bill, I did not like this move toward even low levels of a poisonous element.

I recently broke an old mercury (quicksilver) thermometer in my bedroom when I was ill.  I did experience some of the effects of mercury poisoning, such as vivid nightmares and itching.  When I was a child, we would play with liquid mercury when a thermometer broke.  I have to say it was fun, but the liquid also changes to gaseous form which enters the body through the respiratory tract.

Many people do not know how to dispose of the mercury fluorescent lights properly, and end up throwing them in the recycling where they will be broken.  That's what they have been doing with their light bulbs.  Some people don't even recycle, they just throw everything in the trash.  I'm happy to report that several companies have adapted halogen lights to light bulbs.  I'm going to use those instead of the florescent.  LED lights are also an option, however they come at twice the price.  I hope you'll join me in a mercury-free lighted world.  As a bonus, the colors are better.

I think it's important to be savvy to the things of this world, and not just the spiritual plane.  But if it makes you feel better, I'll tell you to buy halogen light bulbs because I think Jesus wants you to.  When the Lord said "Let there be light," he certainly didn't mean for it to have mercury in the bulb.  And please take your old mercury bulbs to Home Depot or Lowe's since they offer free recycling.

Responsible pet ownership

It's starting to be too expensive to own a pet.  Probably 50 years ago people had a more balanced view of a family pet.  But nowadays they are often referred to as fur children.  I've had pets my who life.  I used to dress my cat in baby clothes and he would allow this, purring happily and drooling all the while, because he just wanted to be touched and held.

Ebates for cash back $10 gift card!

From time to time I find out about a great program that gives some good online discounts, but this has to be the best I've seen.

Ebates Coupons and Cash Back
All you do is click over from here and sign up.  As soon as you make a purchase at one of their many stores, you will get cash back to you Paypal account (or by check if you are old-fashioned) and the $10 gift card in the mail.  Many companies are doing this kind of program, however, some have different stores.

Ebates Coupons and Cash Back
This program even has discounts for Travelocity and Expedia on top of the discounts you already get.  And the $10 gift card selection is quite good.  Yes, I would also get a small bonus, so help me out, and help yourself out, as you can also get that bonus.  Every penny can make a difference!  I literally got this in the mail right after posting this.

French boys aren't all romantic

There is a mythology out there that French boys are so romantic.  Really, it seems more like people get caught up in visiting Paris, and are open to new experiences.  Seeing the lights from the top of the Eiffel Tower is surely impressive, seeing the with someone you're attracted to is certainly romantic - unless you just had a fight about finding the place - then it's just impressive, but not romantic.  In any case, this young French woman living in Paris, studying Japanese has a great deal to say about this.  I think she's cute and funny.  She's also the same girl from the post titled "Be Happy As A Single."  Here, she basically tells us that a jerk is a jerk in any language.  Her faith in people is sweet, naive, and slightly misplaced - which only adds to her charm.  She seems open and friendly - but even if you aren't, jerks are still jerks and some will try with anyone.  I like her.  :)

Hoarding is now considered a mental disorder according to DSM 5

Every few years the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual gets a new edition.  This is actually a good thing.  For hoarding, a new classification as a mental disorder elevates the difficulty people have been experiencing.  At one time it would have just been considered that the person hoarding is lazy and dirty.  However, experience with hoarding has taught people more about it.  It does come with negatives.

Let's bring back The Dating Game! (And forget The Bachelor and The Bachelorette.)

The Dating Game.jpg
The Bachelor and The Bachelorette sequester men and women from their friends and families for weeks on end.  The locales are straight from fantasy.  Most people will never go there.  The stakes are high and the course is set for engagement at the end of a short and intense time period.  And it's totally fake.  Instead, I'd like for us to bring back The Dating Game!  Why?

E. W. Jackson: Give to the rich - even if the Bible says to give to the poor

File:Dr. Hutton's Church on Second Avenue, from Robert N. Dennis collection of stereoscopic views crop.jpg
St. George's Episcopal Church
There really is nothing new under the sun, just as Ecclesiastes promises.  But this one takes the cake.  In fact, Jackson would like for you all to eat cake since you have no bread.  The Prosperity Gospel is going thud in the same way the CEO of Abercrombie and Fitch made his brands distasteful to anyone with a heart.  Some of the "cool kids with lots of friends" have a heart.  Look at all of the musicians and actors who support charitable causes.  Let's break down what's wrong with Jackson and send him some serious prayer since his "new" concept of "upward giving" sounds just like owing your soul to the company store.  The poor live in company houses so they aren't paid much, are paid only in a scrip that only can be used at the company store with excessively high prices.

Bachelorette said no to the "fantasy suite" but it's all fake

The Bachelorette is back - which is always good for some entertainment.  It's quite fake by all accounts.  I'd like to know who actually chooses from 25 guys to whittle it down to The One?  While I applaud Bachelorette Desiree for making it clear that she's "not that kind of girl,"  nothing happenson this show that the producers don't know about and haven't OK'd.  It's possible that if she were "that kind of girl" that she would have gone to the "Fantasy Suite," but let's be serious.  The Nice Girls from The Bachelor are the ones who become The Bachlorette.

Everyone seems so heartbreakingly sincere about their quest for love, but with the pressure on love is elusive.  Very few of the couples who got together on the show have lasted beyond a year.  Perhaps our expectations are too high for this show...that has me thinking...Remember The Dating Game?  I've seen some clips of it and it was often hilarious.  Perhaps the most we should expect of people we meet on television is a date with no expectation of anything after.

Be happy as a single: You don't need a boyfriend or girlfriend

One of the joys of modern life is that you don't have to be in a relationship.  This girl definitely has the right attitude, however, it also helps her that she's 21.  I know that many of my readers are beyond their 20s and even 30s, so they may have a level of frustration that this girl in her vlog just hasn't been through.

Why is it so hard to leave him? Is it sexual sin? Or something else?

I've written long and often about some of my past loves - those sweet Christian boys who seem to chronically ditch the DTR talk.  (DTR stands for define the relationship.)  There are a bunch of sexual purity and abstinence pushers who are teaching a false gospel that everything boils down to sex leading people into or staying it bad relationships, but that isn't always the case.

Oklahoma tornado brings out the good, the bad and the ugly in 2013

The Bad - A tornado hit Oklahoma Monday destroying homes and killing a few people.
The Good - A little old lady's prayers were answered when both she and her dog were alright.  Many people survived - even if their homes were decimated.

The Ugly - Pat Robertson's commentary.  Is this man really a Christian?  He shows no compassion for people whatsoever.  I wouldn't want him to be my pastor!  Videos below...

Second thoughs about #FitchtheHomeless

I posted some of my thoughts on a recent article by Relevant Magazine about the CEO of Abercrombie & Fitch with his nasty remarks about people.
The point should not be to level the playing field so that we can all wear A&F, the point should be that we stop wearing it because it has offended us.  (Not that I ever wore it being outside the target sizes.)  However, we ought to also stop wearing Hollister and Gilly Hicks since those are also A&F.  Homeless people have feelings too, though, and many would rather wear something that lines up with their ethics.  Yes, homeless people have ethics and morals because they're actual people and not just street detritus.  But yes, I do recall there being a preference that their clothing not be donated to non-cool people.  Note to exclusionary groups: best not let people know or put a positive spin on it so it's not so offensive.

Why Fitchthehomeless backfires.

10 Dating Tips for the Christian Man video

This is one of the funniest things I have seen about Christian dating tips.  It's well worth the few minutes it will take you to watch.  The description says it is based on dating tips from the 1960s but slightly modified.  Egad!

This little shrt flick is peppered with subtle sarcasm which makes it uberfun!  Remember to pray before your date.  If you are truly saved you haven't even thought about an unsupervised date until you are 21.  For a Christian man every date is a potential mate!  And don't forget to grill her!

Seeking Asian female? Maybe you shouldn't.

seeking asian female
It's called "Yellow Fever" in some circles.  Some guys want a cute, submissive Asian woman to love and serve them.  For some this is successful.  But often it ends in tragedy.  PBS will be showing a documentary called "Seeking Asian Female" about an older man who finds love online with a foreign woman.  In the comments regarding this show, a man tells his story of finding love online and being left in the dust after a few short years.  Actually, the rest of the comments flesh out about the same story.

Any woman would actually have to be quite ambitious to sign up to find love online and leave their families hoping to find a better life.  But once they find it, learn English, and catch up on the cultural differences, they don't need the man anymore, do they?  Well-unless he's very good looking and wealthy.  But, friends, a good looking and wealthy man wouldn't need to be seeking this kind of love arrangement, would he??? He would be able to find an Asian woman in the urban area where he lives.

Book Review: Heaven Is Real But So Is Hell by Vassula Ryden

Heaven Is Real But So Is HellPerhaps some of you might be familiar with the work of modern day prophet Vassula Ryden - but I'm betting that most of you live in blissful unawareness of this because the protestant church often doesn't accept modern miracles.

Vassula was a casual Greek Orthodox Christian who had spiritual visions as a child.  I know, I know; you're thinking what I was thinking.  She's got to be a nut or a charlatan or possessed by an evil spirit who makes her to this automatic writing.  Jane Roberts entered into communications with a spirit called Seth who spoke through her while he husband made audio recordings which they later transcribed.  The first book was called ever so aptly "Seth Speaks."  That communication was a bunch of New Age hooey that was pretty hard to swallow but there were many books and many devotees just like Shirley McLaine.  Vassula isn't like this.

College dating advice has a grain of truth

I wish I had found my future husband while I was still in college.  I might have had some boys interested in me, but the majority didn't make it very clear.  See, I wasn't a hookup kind of girl.  I went to church.  I tried to hang out with nice boys.  But in terms of dating, either nothing felt right that did happen or nothing happened.

Christians and the monster of love & dating

"Eaten By The Monster of Love" by Sparks was a popular song in the 1980s which basically begs, "don't let it get me!"  It goes on "It's worse than war, it's worse than death."  It certainly seems Christians approach love and sex as monsters about to devour us in apocalyptic doom.  Since dating can potentially lead to love and marriage, Christians have become overly wary.

Patrick Stewart talks about growing up in a violent home

Every weekend Dad would go on a bender and do despicable things to his wife and children.  Every Monday he was ashamed.  How many children around the world grow up like this?  How many women have husbands like this?  It's going to be a bad weekend for some. This starts off slowly and you can tell he's deeply emotional talking about this.

My massage therapist, her man hands, and Jesus

I have a female massage therapist through my chiropractor who is gifted with what you could call "man hands."  Her name is Berta.  I realized she was gifted at the first visit. Her preferred lubricant on bare skin is just oil.  She skips the fragrance, that's for wimps.  She'd also prefer for you to strip as much as possible so she can slide her oiled hands over your aches and pains.

A film about courtship? Really?

I got an email from a filmmaker recently.  I don't know what to make of this.  Perhaps this is bringing up some of my worst nightmares that courtship forces women into a more subservient role than the Gospel intends.  If you talk to women in Mexico (I did a mission there), many are thrilled when their husbands become Christians because they are taught to love their wives rather than follow the old machismo ways.  (It's sort of sad because macho once meant brave and valiant.)  I also overheard men sitting around talking about some of the mistreatment some of their friends doled out on their wives, showing off how badly they could treat their wives and still get them to do things for them.  One story involved making the wife get on her knees.  Another involved kicking the wife.  These men had no idea I spoke Spanish.  I just listened.

In any case, there are some things about these families and the way they comport themselves that really bother me.  Let's just say, I won't be donating to get this film made. And really, why not knock on the doors of the proponents of this lifestyle?  Here is my take on the series of videos the filmmaker posted online.

Surving Church As A Single in Stuff Christians Like Style

As we know, modern Christianity still doesn't quite know what to do with its burgeoning singles population.  Neither does any other religion.  John Acuff came up with a scoring system of sorts to help you deal with being single at church.  It got a few LOLs out of me to be sure!  Jon Acuff's "Surviving Church As A Single."

Savvy makes another top 100!!

I just got this email today!  It's a few days old, but it made me very happy to hear some good news about my blog.  Please check out some of the other noteworthy blogs which also made the Top 100!!

They have some really great dating advice on their blog and some discounts to dating websites.  I only worry a little bit about their selections of movies for singles.  Hmmm.  Some are not exactly known for espousing Christian values.  But I'd be lying if I said I hadn't watched them and enjoyed them.

Why gun nuts should love Malcolm X and the Black Panthers.

In my last post, I talked about John Lewis whose philosophy was "Love is much stronger than hate."  That philosophy wasn't good enough for Malcolm X who preached a philosophy of equality by any means necessary.  It was in 1964 that he made his famed speech "The Ballot or the Bullet"

If we don't do something real soon, I think you'll have to agree that we're going to be forced either to use the ballot or the bullet. It's one or the other in 1964. It isn't that time is running out -- time has run out!
1964 threatens to be the most explosive year America has ever witnessed. The most explosive year. Why? It's also a political year. It's the year when all of the white politicians will be back in the so-called Negro community jiving you and me for some votes. The year when all of the white political crooks will be right back in your and my community with their false promises, building up our hopes for a letdown, with their trickery and their treachery, with their false promises which they don't intend to keep. As they nourish these dissatisfactions, it can only lead to one thing, an explosion; and now we have the type of black man on the scene in America today -- I'm sorry, Brother Lomax -- who just doesn't intend to turn the other cheek any longer...

So it's time in 1964 to wake up. And when you see them coming up with that kind of conspiracy, let them know your eyes are open. And let them know you -- something else that's wide open too. It's got to be the ballot or the bullet. The ballot or the bullet. If you're afraid to use an expression like that, you should get on out of the country; you should get back in the cotton patch; you should get back in the alley...
No, if you never see me another time in your life, if I die in the morning, I'll die saying one thing: the ballot or the bullet, the ballot or the bullet.

John Lewis to Rush Limbaugh "Love is much stronger than hate"

Rush Limbaugh, the Malcolm X sympathizer...
Malcolm X, cover of Ebony.

It comes as no surprise that  Rush Limbaugh stuck his foot in his mouth again, this time totally missing the point about the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s by wondering if John Lewis would have had his skull fractured had he been packing a gun.

If Malcom X had been on the bridge marching to Selma, Alabama in protest of not being able to register to vote, Malcolm X would have been armed and dangerous along with members of the Black Panthers.  It was Malcolm X who gave the famous "The Ballot or the Bullet" speech.  It was Malcolm X who appeared holding an M1 carbine on the cover of Ebony Magazine in 1964.  He referred to Martin Luther King, Jr. as "an Uncle Tom," or a "stooge."   Meanwhile MLK preached "I have a dream" in which he hoped all God's children would join hands and sing "free at last" together.  What fluff!!

Millionaire Matchmaker has her work cut out for her with this one!

I'm so glad I have a sweetheart.  This is what's out there waiting for some of you.  For starters he has looks, money and a big house.  And then he only talked about himself, his money, his house, his cars, his sex drive, his penis, his multiple divorces, and how no woman measures up.  Sounds like a self-absorbed douche!

If you are single instead of with a man like this, please count your lucky stars and praise the Lord!

The Millionaire Matchmaker is a bit of a piece of work herself, but that's another story.

Heroine of Japanese women's rights passes away

Beate Sirota Gordon

You might think you aren't a feminist or that Christianity and feminism have nothing to do with each other.  I disagree.  Feminism can take many forms.  In Japan circa 1945, women were still treated as property to be bought and sold.  They had virtually no rights at all - they could not vote, inherit or buy property.  Beate Gordon was a part of changing Japanese history at the tender age of 22 by writing women's basic rights into the Japanese constitution.

What made her special?  She was one of only a handful of people serving the United States who spoke fluent Japanese.  She spent some time living in Japan with her parents.  Her father was a renowned concert pianist and music teacher.  She left Japan to study at Mills College in Oakland, CA where she majored in modern languages.  She returned to Japan by securing a job as an interpreter for General McArthur, desperate to find her parents.  She married in 1947!  Wow.  She wrote an auto-biography titled "The Only Woman In The Room."  She recently passed away, just six months after her husband of many years. Check out this article about her.

Chemtrails vs. Contrails: Urban Myths 101

Jet contrails over Los Angeles
Since this blog is, in part, about being savvy to the world around you, I thought I'd take a moment to go Snopes on y'all!  For those who don't know about it, www.Snopes.com is a great website where they regularly debunk myths, explain urban legends, and investigate conspiracy theories.  Well, this business of chemtrails is the same kind of thing.
